The next generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee could share its foundations with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
The CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Sergio Marchionne, told the press that the next Grand Cherokee could be based on the Giorgio platform designed by Alfa Romeo. This announcement is not a surprise . The recent CEO of Alfa Romeo and Maserati, Reid Bigland, had indeed stated the possibility at the end of November.
“Changing this platform for other models in the FCA group is a possibility. We hold a real jewel with this platform. In terms of driving dynamics and behavior, it is the best in its class. It will therefore be difficult to keep it as an exclusivity for Alfa Romeo, “the boss said on the sidelines of the Los Angeles show.
The US manufacturer is currently conducting feasibility tests to confirm the viability of the Italian platform against the requirements of the Grand Cherokee, especially off-road.
FCA seeks to amortize the cost of developing the Giorgio platform estimated at nearly one billion euros. The low volumes of Alfa Romeo do not make it possible to achieve this.
As a reminder, the Giorgio platform received this patronymic following the revelation of the existence of this future platform by Georg Kacher, automotive journalist.
