Automotive brands have long avoided specifying the profile of their products, since even cars that have traditionally been associated with “men of action” can lose customers who do not meet the imagined characteristics. However, for the presentation of the new Infiniti QX60 (the best-selling SUV of the brand worldwide), the Japanese luxury firm declares that it is oriented to “Claire”.
“Claire” is a concept of a successful woman (ideally a businesswoman) with children or “dogs” and, although she is a lover of the world of luxury, she is not interested in knowing many details about the car she drives. You just want it to work for you and to correspond to the lifestyle you want to project.
Keeping this in mind, it is much easier to understand some of the things we find in the new Infiniti QX60, which is “infinitely” better than the generation it replaces in one respect: It no longer looks like a better- trimmed Nissan Pathfinder .
Inside doors, the Infiniti QX60 is a luxurious space that combines the use of leather, fine woods and high-quality plastics. This environment of highly manufactured composites is interestingly placed in a way that not only looks good, but serves a functional purpose.
In this way, we see a 12.3-inch screen embedded in a surface that has a leather covering with diamond patterns that looks extremely elegant throughout this great piece of interior. These same figures remain the vestment of the seats of the three rows.
As has become a custom in the interior design of today’s cars, the main screen is used to control many of the elements of operation and connectivity. However, Infiniti has not completely ditched the buttons and, in that sense, it is appreciated to find knobs and keys to control commands such as volume and air conditioning.
This, in addition to being extremely practical when we want to act quickly, complements the elegant appearance of the QX60, as it contrasts with the huge monitor.
One of the best virtues of this SUV is the development of technologies that will simplify tasks that were previously complicated or, at least, uncomfortable. For example, to enter the third row of seats, you just need to press a button that runs through the seat along a rail and when it reaches the end, it bends so that we enter without having to make contortions or uncomfortable movements.
In the same vein, we can fold the third row of seats to store more things with the press of a button that activates a system that prevents us from having to stretch or pull the bench to reposition it.
The level of detail in the interior is an amplification of what goes on in the exterior design of this model, as the general appearance of this model is completely different from that of the first generation.
Infiniti defines it as an interpretation of the ” new minimalism” Japanese , where it tries to capture the fluidity of the forms of elements of nature in mechanical objects, as in this case, a car.
The result of this practice is an SUV with an elegant design and, above all, differentiated from what is present in the current family truck market. In the more equipped version, it will be possible to request a two-tone paint job that gives a lot of personality to a model that was crying out for a renovation.
The intention of providing comfort remains in the handling of the new QX60, because if the driving experience is to be defined in any way, that adjective would suit it well.
This SUV handles comfortably in every possible way. The steering is smooth and precise, the suspension is extremely gentle with the imperfections of the road, the configuration of the seats provides a feeling of comfort and ergonomics so that long trips are not tiring and the ride does not present many variations in its behavior. However, this very feature can be one of your weak points.
Its engine is a 3.0-liter V6 that generates almost 300 horsepower. This engine is associated with a 9-speed automatic transmission and although its power is enough to move this SUV decently, it lacks surprising capabilities in sudden acceleration tasks.
When a hot start is called for, this SUV falls short against our expectations. This slight is accentuated when we contrast it against specimens that could be its rivals in the segment such as the Lincoln Aviator.
However, conceived as a car for such a specific profile as the one Infiniti chooses to attack, power should not be a priority feature.
The Infiniti QX60 seeks to replicate the success its previous generation achieved in positioning itself as the brand’s best-selling model on a global and national scale. However, I consider that much of this intention will depend on the price because, in a context where practically every luxury brand has a proposal, considering this SUV as a purchase option will not be easy.
