Which electric cars are the most sold in the world? Here are the top 10 most popular “zero emission” models at the end of the 12 months of 2020.
Tesla takes the lion’s share of the electric market. Elon Musk’s brand , which is still struggling to find its marks in Europe, finished atop the electric sales rankings for the second year in a row with its flagship model: the Model 3 .
According to data compiled by the specialized site EV sales Blogsite , out of the half a million vehicles registered by Tesla during 2020, 365,240 were Model 3s , which constitutes a 12% share of the global market (3,124,000 electric cars).
Second in the hierarchy, the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV. The city car, produced by SAIC (Shanghai Auto) in a joint venture with General Motors and Wuling, is a hit with 119,255 units sold on the Chinese market alone, where the push for electric vehicles is stronger than elsewhere.
The Renault Zoe is not to be outdone and is on the third step of the podium with more than 100,000 registered models. A nice score for the Renault group, whose 100% electric city car is the best-selling in France and in Europe in 2020.
INTER-TESLA STRUGGLE IN 2021?
A hair’s breadth from the top, the Tesla Model Y , which arrived later on the market, continues to grow and could, why not from 2021, come to challenge the supremacy of its colleague from Palo Alto. In the rest of the ranking ( above in slideshow ), Hyundai is in the top 5 with the Kona , ahead of Volkswagen’s ID.3 , very popular in Europe , the Nissan Leaf and the Audi e-Tron (including the GT version has just been unveiled).
The top 10 is completed by two Chinese models: the Baojun E-Series (available in several variants), also owned by SAIC, and the Ora Black Cat , presented in 2019 under the name R1, designed by Great Wall Motors.
