For those unfamiliar with it, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport is the sportier and performance-focused version of the German compact sedan (pending a probable Clubsport S). This is the maximum extremeization of the GTI mechanics, therefore keeping its front-wheel drive , without going to annoy the 300 HP of the Golf R, which obviously is all-wheel drive. It is powered by the well-known 2.0 TFSi of the latest generation, increased for the occasion to a full 300 HP round of power, against the 275 HP of the previous Clubsport.
Golf GTI Clubsport 2021: great work on suspension and driving dynamics
In addition to the increase in power, a great deal of work involved the entire driving dynamics sector, employing Volkswagen test drivers and technicians for over 3 months of testing. We can now find a stiffer set-up than the traditional GTI, lowered by about 15 mm which now also receives the “Nurburgring” mode which sets the steering, brakes, set-up and differential to be able to better face the legendary German circuit. There is also a new centralized vehicle dynamics management system (Vehicle Dynamics Manager) which for the first time integrates the electro-hydraulic multi-clutch differential (VAQ) into its operating logics . We then find the differentialelectronic transverse locking XDS and the DCC electronically controlled shock absorbers .
The steering has also been recalibrated , with a new power assistance capable of giving better feedback on the steering ring and greater sensitivity on the wheels. Also on the front axle, in order to improve steering response and cornering precision, the camber has been increased by about 1 ° . The aerodynamics have also been improved , with a slight increase in the vertical charge at high speeds and greater efficiency for cornering. The work is completed by the new 18 “perforated front brake discs with high performance calipers and pads and new dedicated 19″ rims.
2.0 TFSI: for the GTI Clubsport 2021 it reaches up to 300 hp
The beating heart of the new Golf GTI Clubsport 2021 has also been completely revised, with a nice power tuning to the already appreciated 2.0 TFSI with the initials EA888 evo4. Now it develops the beauty of 300 HP and 400 Nm of maximum torque , thus being able to reach 250 km / h (self-limited) and with a 0-100 km / h covered in less than 6 seconds. Obviously it will be mated to its faithful performance companion, the now unstoppable seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission, tuned for the occasion to ensure slightly faster and faster gear changes. 55 HP and 30 Nm are now calculated compared to the 2021 GTI, thanks to new fuel injectors that collaborate with a new injection system that goes from 200 bar to 350 bar. Also new is the Continental turbocharger which collaborates with a larger and more efficient intercooler.
Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport 2021: how does the design change?
The design of the new Clubsport has not been changed but some targeted interventions have been carried out. In the front stands a new lower mouth, wider and more threatening, with new plastic fins that improve the aerodynamic profile. These work in tandem with the new rear splitter, which is more voluminous than that of the GTI, which is integrated. The new 18 or 19 “wheels and the new dedicated livery of the side also stand out.
Dedicated finishes also inside
Small improvements also in the interior, where we find better materials and more racing finishes to make the interior even more sporty. The steering wheel features two new handles made of Alcantara, the same material that we also find in the center of the sports seats with integrated headrests and on the door panel. The seats are also embellished with new red contrast stitching.
