SsangYong has updated for the second time the Korando, a 4,41 m in length. SsangYong Korando was launched in 2011 and received changes in 2014. It is still the same car.
The changes affect the exterior, the passenger compartment and minimally the available equipment. The new bumper, the bonnet, the headlights, the fog lamps, the front fins and the alloy wheels, can be 16, 17 or 18 inches depending on the level of equipment.
The dashboard and door panels receive new materials that fit better, but are still simple. They also change the steering wheel, the instrumentation, the controls of the multimedia system and the knobs for the manual selectors of automatic as well as manual. SsangYong says it has improved acoustic and rolling insulation, but has not provided us with technical information.
It is available with a single 2.2 liter diesel engine and 178 horsepower, with front or full wheel drive, manual or automatic transmission and three trim levels (Line, Premium and Limited;). The most affordable, the Korando D22T 4×2 Line, is on sale from 19 150 euros. There is no off-road of this size and cheaper power. It is followed by the Fiat 500X Cross 2.0 Multijet 140 CV 4×4 , and that is is much more expensive , smaller and less powerful. A Ford Kuga with the same power (179 hp) and automatic transmission, costs 30 990 euros,
The Korando 2017 can be a good alternative for those who need a SUV and can not or do not want to shell out the usual cost of more than 25,000 euros. In exchange you will get a vehicle of simple appearance, well equipped and with a normal level of refinement, at the cost of giving up some safety elements that are available in their competitors (such as the emergency brakebrake with obstacle detection or the warning of change Of involuntary lane , which may have other SsangYong models, such as the Tivoli or XLV ).
The Diesel engine has a somewhat rough operation running, more by the noise it produces than by the vibrations, which barely reach the interior. In any case, it did not bother me. On motorways and on little winding roads, it moves the Korando body with enough freedom, although it has little force when starting from idle and sometimes you have to be careful not to shut the engine, especially on slopes.
In the same presentation, I drove a Tivoli with a 115-horsepower 1.6-liter diesel engine, which I found to be much more refined, quiet, and even just as fast. The feel of the steering is a bit soft and this forces you to be careful in the corners so as not to wobble the passengers making slight corrections. On the go, the feeling of safety is good and the level of comfort, normal. The seats are firm, comfortable and hold the body well, and the driving position is well-suited to travel sitting with a posture similar to that adopted in a tourism.
The passenger compartment is spacious for four occupants. The Korando outstrips many of its rivals for rear passengers’ legroom, has good shoulder width and enough height for tall people to fit untouched by the roof.
The backrest of the second row can be tilted in several positions in a margin of 17.5 °. The boot is large for the size of its body: it has a capacity of 486 liters, practically the same as a SEAT Ateca (485 l) or a Hyundai Tucson (488 l), more than an Audi Q3 (460 l), a Ford Kuga (456 l) and less than a Kia Sportage (503 l) or a Peugeot 3008 (520 l).
The total traction you can have is automatically connected by a Haldex type clutch, with a central differential lock function that transmits 50% of the power to each axle up to 40 km / h. The characteristic angles are normal: 22.6º of attack, 28.3º of exit and 18,5º of ventral. The ground clearance is not much compared to that of other models, 180 mm, just enough to advance safely through forest roads and tracks that are not very deteriorated.
In the standard equipment of the basic version (Line), SsangYong includes speed programmer , thermal front window, sound equipment with USB and auxiliary inputs or 16-inch alloy wheels. From the intermediate level (Premium) you have a navigator, reverse camera, automatic climate control, 17-inch wheels, steering wheel and leather knob or heated front seats. The top level (Limited) includes leather upholstery, sunroof, 18-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, heated rear seats, keyless entry and keyless entry. The multimedia system is managed through a seven-inch screen and navigation mapping is by the Sygic specialist.
