2018 Kia GT prototype, codenamed “CK,” undergoing testing in public in Germany. This could mean that Kia may be putting its upcoming rear-drive sports sedan through high-intensity performance testing on the autobahn, and possibly the Nürburgring race track before its official debut, which will likely be at the 2016 Paris auto show in October.
Like the last prototype we spied, this one is still covered. However, unlike that first prototype, we can see the GT’s LED daytime running lights, which look like it has a different pattern than current Kia models. The GT’s “tiger nose” grille is also a little more visible and it appears that it could feature more rounded edges than the iteration found on Kia’s current lineup. Most of the GT concept’s exterior design has also been retained or toned down slightly on its way to production.
Expect the car to feature similar proportions to the concept, which means it’ll be sized in between the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the Genesis sedan (soon to be called the Genesis G80). The GT will be one of Kia’s premium offerings alongside the new Cadenza and the full-size K900, but unlike those two, the GT will be the performance-oriented model. Rear-wheel drive should be standard while all-wheel drive could be a possible option.
Under the hood, Hyundai/Kia’s new 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6, which first debuted in the Genesis G90 and will also be available in the G80 and a less-powerful engine choice could be offered in the production GT. In the Genesis G90, the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 is rated at 365 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque but our spies say that Kia could extract closer to 400 hp for duty in the GT. An eight-speed automatic transmission may only be the only gearbox available.
Last week, we reported that in some global markets the GT could start under $30,000 USD and that it may wear the Stinger name when it debuts.
