Hyundai has put all the odds on its side for this third generation of i30: consensual design, modern technologies and advanced engines. The compact Korean has never been more competitive with European references. Logic, since it is also built on the Old Continent to seduce the Europeans.
In Europe, the compact sedan segment is one of the largest and most competitive: thirty models sharing a representing more than 2.2 million vehicles market Sold by year only to individuals. So before launching a new model, builders make sure that it has what to stand out.
And the least that can be said is that it is not by the originality of its design that this new i30 will come out of the lot. Only offered in five doors, this one is even very wise. It certainly inaugurates a new look sharp and a new imposing grille. But overall, the lines were softened in favor of sobriety.
In fact, although we feel the German influence, with some Audi front and profile of Volkswagen. Logic when we know that Germany is one of the main markets of the i30. But also that Peter Schreyer, head of the design department of the brand, is a former Volkswagen group.
Not enough risk
The situation is almost identical on board, with a totally renovated furniture, but still very traditional organization. We must recognize that the construction is serious , relatively flattering materials and ergonomics good view. But one can not help thinking that this interior is a bit overwhelmed facing the i-cockpit of a Peugeot 308 , or face that of a Renault Mégane who dares vertical screen diagonal of 22 cm, by example.
Technologically, on the other hand, there is nothing to complain about. The large 8-inch touch screen floating on the dashboard is fast, connectivity is excellent (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), and the induction charging stand is still quite unprecedented in the segment. The i30 even hosts an adaptive cruise control, head-up display, or the audience braking and lane-keeping. Too bad that Hyundai has somewhat neglected the most visible: it lacks a modern block of instrumentation to replace the old needles!
On the livability side too, we see the best against the previous generation. With additional 4 cm in length (4.34 m) the new i30 is shown as living in the rear seats than its competitors, and also practical in terms of loading capacity (395 liters). The loading threshold is at reasonable height, the door cut is well geometric, as is the interior volume. It\’s just a shame that the floor is not really flat when the seat backs are folded down (1,301 liters).
A chassis far away from references
In recent years, we have observed a noticeable disinterest in French for Diesel, especially when it comes to purchasing a city car or a compact car. For this test we opted for a latest-generation petrol engine with four-cylinder 1.4 T-GDI 140 hp , which according to estimates by Hyundai should be chosen by almost 60% of clients (individuals). A high-end engine, which is only available from the Business Finish. And what\’s more is offered with a box with double clutch DCT-7 (1,500 euros).
The first impression is very positive: the engine is quiet and sturdy, the DCT-7 box always appears on the right gear without ever suffering from inertia or show brutal, and the chassis reveals surprisingly comfortable! The i30 is based on a new platform, lighter (1,240 kg), stiffened, and equipped with a multi-link rear axle. It is simply regrettable that the engineers decided to make the steering more direct (by 10%) than before to energize the driving. Linked to a somewhat excessive assistance, this prejudices to the precision.
Damage also that the engine suffers from a small defect making relativize its qualities: strong of 140 hp and 242 Nm of maximum torque, it delivers very correct performance (9.2 s at 0 to 100 km / h). Well assisted by its DCT box very well adjusted and stepped, it ensures at the same time softness of operation, suppleness, and raises appreciable. He revealed however an inordinate appetite of 8.5 l / 100 km on average during our test (homologated to 5.4 l / 100 mixed). To be confirmed in a future test, because of the 3 modes of driving proposed (Eco, Normal and Sport) we have not left the last one.
