The Honda Civic Type R is the most powerful version of the Civic 2017 range . It has a turbocharged 320 horsepower engine, the gearshift is six-speed manual and the dampers can be of variable hardness. The first units will be available from “autumn 2017”, without the mark giving us a more precise date for the moment.
We have driven it in circuit, on motorway and briefly by road during the international presentation in Germany. It is a car with a sporting approach less radical than the model it replaces. It has a more comfortable suspension, the engine and the exhaust make less noise and its driving is less demanding because the reactions of the chassis are not so alive.
It is likely to be more effective in absolute terms, but also less satisfactory for drivers who enjoy testing their riding ability. In return, it can be used as a journal car just like a Ford Focus RS or a SEAT León Cupra .
Civic Type R 2017
Compared to the Civic Type R 2015 , it is between 3500 and 4200 euros more expensive. The engine is gasoline and two liters of displacement, derived from the one that had the previous Type R, where it gave 310 horsepower. At the moment Honda has not communicated what changes it has made to increase the power. At present, only another front-wheel drive vehicle with power equal to or greater than 300 horses is available for sale in Spain: the SEAT León Cupra . The gearshift has a function that “allows the perfect synchronization of gears by equalizing the level of revolutions”.
The suspension is not the same as the normal five-door Civic. The front, McPherson type , has changes in geometry to reduce sudden movements on the steering wheel that can happen when accelerating with intensity. The rear suspension changes completely. It is multi-arm type and has more rigid arms than the previous one, which was of torsion axis. The body has also been revised to increase its rigidity, something that has been achieved by adding adhesive at some points of joining between parts. Honda says that this body is 38 percent more rigid than the previous Civic Type R, but does not say how much it is compared to the current Civic.
Three driving programs can be selected: Comfort, Sport and R. The first one was not available in the previous model and, according to Honda, allows to increase the comfort of march. Each of these programs affect the hardness of the shock absorbers, the hardness of the steering, the throttle response and the feeling that transmits the gearshift.
