The new Volkswagen Polo 2018 is bigger than the Polo 2014 and can have more safety and comfort equipment. It is an expensive car in relation to its alternatives (prices start at € 14 740, prices for the entire range ). The possibility of choosing a body disappears, given that there are no longer three doors or a variant such as the Cross Polo 2015 that had more ground clearance. There is only the five-door pole. In 2018, an all-rounder model called T-Cross will arrive (very similar to the SEAT Arona ) based on this Polo generation.
Initially there are only gasoline engines -with 65, 75 and 95 HP- to which will be added, in what remains of 2017, the rest of the engines until completing an offer of five gasoline, two diesel and one that can be operated with gas natural
This Volkswagen Polo 2018 is larger on the outside: 8 centimeters more in length and 7 cm more in width (the height decreases 1 cm). there is more space for the legs of the passengers in the second row – thanks to the increase in wheelbase (from 2.47 to 2.56 m) -, more width and more height . The trunk has 351 liters, 71 more, and is now among the largest among its alternatives.
The range of engines is composed of five petrol -with powers between 65 and 200 hp-, two diesel-80 and 95 hp- and one 90 hp natural gas. The natural gas engine and all gasoline, except the 200 hp (Polo GTI version), are three cylinders; the rest are four. The transmission can be manual five or six gears, or automatic seven DSG ( double clutchtype ). The traction is always on the front wheels. During the two presentations to which we have gone, we have driven the Polo with two petrol engines -1.0 MPI of 75 HP and 1.0 TSI of 95 HP and with one Diesel, 1.6 TDI 95 HP. The two of greater power move with certain agility the vehicle, vibrate little and have a pleasant operation, although as it is logical, they differ in the form with which they deliver the power. The lower power, which is atmospheric , is very suitable for city and surroundings because it emits little noise, but outside of these environments it does not have much acceleration capacity and can lack power to circulate quickly. Dynamically, the Polo is a vehicle as agile and stable as a SEAT Ibiza or a Mazda2, but also offers a good level of comfort, superior to that of a Ford Fiesta and, above all, that of a MINI 5 doors . The version with petrol engine of 95 HP has a price of € 17 030. It is much more than what your alternatives with equivalent engine cost, such as an Opel Corsa (€ 12,155), a Ford Fiesta (€ 15,075), a SEAT Ibiza (€ 14,700) or a Renault Clio (€ 14,032);
Volkswagen offers three levels of equipment -Edition, Advance and Sport; – and three additional customization packages -R-Line, Black and Style-. From the basic level (Edition) the emergency brake booster with obstacle and pedestrian detection is standard. The pilots are LEDs and, as an option, the headlights can also perform all lighting functions using LED technology. The available tires range from 14 to 18 inches in diameter.
The sportiest and fastest version, the Polo GTI, has a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine that gives 200 hp and a suspension that reduces the body height by 15 mm with respect to the ground. Its equipment is specific, has 17-inch wheels as standard, checkered upholstery and decorative elements in red, such as brake calipers, body sconces and some details of the interior.
There are several multimedia systems available, which can be associated with different screen sizes, between 6.5 and 8.0 inches. They are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and have the Mirror Link function that replicates the screen of a mobile phone. As it happens in several models of the Volkswagen Group, the instrumentation can be analog or digital (Digital Cockpit ). The most powerful sound equipment is developed by the specialist Beats. In front of the gear lever there is a space designed for the wireless charging of mobile phones .
Volkswagen offers a wide selection of decorative elements. There are 17 different colors for interior panels, 11 upholstery designs, 12 different rims and 14 body colors.
Among the elements of safety and comfort you can have are the active speed controller (it has a Stop & Go function, so in a short stop, if the vehicle in front of the car starts moving again, the system automatically puts the Polo back in motion). emergency braking in case of rear cross traffic, detection of vehicles in the blind spot of the rear-view mirror , semi-autonomous parking system (the system moves the steering while the driver must take charge of controlling the speed by pedals), the keyless opening and starting and the involuntary lane change assistant .
The Polo 2018 Polo is built on the basis of the MQB A0 platform, the same as that of the SEAT Ibiza 2017. It is manufactured at the plant that Volkswagen has in Pamplona.

The new Polo is wider than the previous one, especially in width between doors. At this level, according to our measurements , it is among the best and is the one that has the most separation between the ISOFIX anchorages on each side (that is, it is the one that leaves the most space between two seats).
It is also the best for the height available between the sidewalk and the roof – especially in the second row where even passengers can be accommodated almost two meters high – and in legroom.
The rear seats are easily accessed. The doors ) open about 70 degrees, the roof does not descend much and there is enough room to pass the foot between the stool and the central pillar of the body. Instead, it has a central tunnel that rises high from the ground and can be an annoying obstacle to move from one side of the car to the other.
The interior lighting is provided with two ceiling lights, one for each row of seats. For the rear seats there are no power outlets (neither USB nor 12 V). In front there are, and even a wireless charging zone for compatible phones ).
It has been easy for me to feel comfortable at the wheel. Once placed the seat and the steering wheel to my liking-both can be moved in wide paths, all the controls were left to hand and I have not found anything that hindered the movements of the arms when driving.
At least in the Poles I climbed, the dashboard was made of soft plastic on the top and on the underside of the decorative piece that is on top of the glove compartment. This piece can be of various colors and has given me the impression that it resists friction well. On the other hand, the hard plastic that covers the rest of the areas looks worse and can be a light color that I do not recommend because it is very easy to touch it and leave marks on it. In general, the feeling of quality that the cabin transmits is correct, although there are details that are less careful: there are no handles in any of the seats and, in the doors of the rear seats, there is a small part that is not covered by plastic and leave veneer in sight
The trunk that is seen when opening the gate has regular shapes and a normal capacity. There is a point of light on the right side and two places to hang a bag. Unlike what happens in other cars of this size, this area of the car does not seem neglected either by materials or by its strength.
Below the floor, there is a very large circular hole, since it is the space reserved for the spare wheel. With this gap is with which the 351 liters of capacity are achieved. The SEAT Ibiza and the Suzuki Baleno , both with 355 l capacity, are the only two models in this list of similar cars that slightly outperform the new Polo. Compared to the Nissan Micra (300 l) or the Mazda2 (260 l), for example, the difference is significant.
The spare wheel is optional and can be of exceptional use or one of the same size as the rest.
