BMW X5 xDrive 40e: Rechargeable Hybrid 4×4 Arrives – For high-end manufacturers, the only way to reduce the average CO2 emissions as intended by the European Union is to multiply the rechargeable electric and hybrid offerings. Having launched one after the i3 electric city car and i8 plug-in hybrid sports, BMW is now embarking on the ground of the large plug-in hybrid SUV with the BMW X5 xDrive 40e.
Announced under the form of the concept carConcept5 X5 eDrive at the IAA in 2013, this model is not a surprise. By marketing this model, the Bavarian manufacturer is only following its competitors. Porsche has in fact already launched its e-Cayenne S Hybrid (read our test of the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid-e ), while Audi is preparing to market its e-tron Q7 and Volvo XC90’s T8 Twin Engine (read our first taken into the hands of the Volvo XC90 ). The reason for such a passion for the genre lies in the European measurement cycle of consumption, very favorable to PHEVs.Thus, the new BMW sticks on paper at 3.3 l / 100 km (78 g / km CO2), well away from the actual consumption of the vehicle when the battery depleted, which instead turns around 11 l / 100 km, as BMW has the honesty to announce it.
Externally, the BMW X5 xDrive 40e is barely distinguishable from other X5.The only novelty, in addition monograms, concerning the appearance of a charging hatch on the left front fender. It is thus possible to recharge the lithium-ion battery 9 kWh to browse 31 km in all-electric mode. You will have to make do with 113 hp (83 kW) electric motor located in the eight-speed automatic transmission (ZF origin), some just to deal with 2230 kg of the craft. The speed is limited to 120 km / h in electric mode.
This set is associated with the four-cylinder B48 fuel lines, with a displacement of 2.0 liters. This block resulting from the recent BMW modular engine family has already been seen in the Mini and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. In the X5 xDrive40d, it develops an output of 245 horsepower. In total, the combined power available is 313 hp. That allows you to go from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds and provides a top speed of 210 km / h.
Inside and out, the BMW X5 xDrive 40e not will confuse the regulars. The environment is identical and the only notable change is the screen, now able to display real-time operation of the engine, as is the case for all hybrid market almost. Furthermore, the implementation of the battery in the trunk floor nibbles a little volume at the same time it prevents to offer a seven-seat version. For now, BMW has not announced prices or the release date of this new model, which will have its world premiere at the show in New York.
