The new X1 abandons architecture expensive BMW-powered, mechanical cylinders 6, to treat its habitability and boot space.
VERDICT CHRONO
Cockpit wider and bigger chest significantly strengthen the family vocation of this compact SUV that shares platform and engines with the Active Tourer MPV. Without affecting provided the dynamism which is his trademark. We are reassured!
BMW X1 Test, THE PROJECT

Launched in 2009, the X1 is the first premium compact SUV market. Which assured him a great success, with sales reaching 730,000 units worldwide to date. But, as is the story, in time, the master has been overtaken by his students. AudiQ3, Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes GLA and another Volvo XC60 have thus come to graze on her flowerbeds. To regain control, the Bavarian could not settle for half measures. It is a real cultural revolution that he himself for this second generation.
TECHNICAL

If his overall look remains the same, the X1 nonetheless significantly change proportions. Shortcut to 1.5 cm, especially it sees, through the transverse position of the motor, its shortcut cover 15 cm. Asserting its SUV look, it is enhanced at the same time of 5 cm and 2 cm widens. Built on the UKL platform, now common to all BMW and Mini traction, it is available in two-wheel drive (sDrive) on basic versions and all-wheel drive (xDrive) over others. In this case, however, are only the front wheels are driven most of the time, the torque being transferred, wholly or partially, to the rear wheels via a clutch pack in the event of loss of adhesion of the front train.

At launch, these days, the range is based on two petrol versions (xDrive 20i 192ch and xDrive 25i 231 hp) and three diesel versions (sDrive 18d 150hp, xDrive 20d 190 hp and xDrive 25d 231 hp), all with serial with the exception of the sDrive 18d (BVM6), a new 8-speed automatic transmission. This catalog will however be completed before the end of the year by versions with manual transmission and the entry-level versions sDrive 18i sDrive 16d 136 hp and 116 hp. Four trim levels are offered (Lounge, Sport, and Xline msport), with a tariff which ranges from € 31 950 to 48 850 for petrol and € 32,150 to € 50,300 for the diesel. This represents an increase of approximately € 1,000 from the previous model and € 2,000 compared to the Active Tourer. The new X1 is thus positioned exactly at the level of its main competitors.
LIFE ON BOARD

The space dedicated to passengers in the cabin is the main beneficiary of the new architecture. This saves 4 cm knee to the back seats, while the transmission tunnel is lowered 6 cm. Elevated 6 cm, the seat at the same time provides a more upright position and also a better view of the road. Also raised by 3.5 cm, the driving position is it that more enjoyable and safe city.

With 505 liters, the boot capacity is progressing for its 20% share. It can also be increased to 1550 l by folding down the rear seatback. Optional (€ 310), it can become sliding of 13 cm and the right front seat backrest can also be folded down to transport long objects. The modularity of the X1 is then much more comparable to that of an MPV.

Inspired by the Active Tourer but clean X1, the dashboard is the BMW fashion, stripped and functional. The materials and finish, significant progress, in turn reinforces the opulent atmosphere. Standard equipment is quite correct, but we must go for the superior finishes and options to enjoy a truly premium staffing standard. Head-up display on the windscreen or automatic driving in traffic jams (included in the Advanced Safety Pack to € 1,230) then weigh down an already adding salt.
THE OPINION OF POINT AUTO

The pill will certainly not go down to the purists piquousés for propulsion, but let\’s face it, this new version front wheel does not diminish the pleasure of driving the X1. Quite the contrary. While equipped with the variable direction Direct Drive (€ 250 optional) and suspension damping control Select Drive (550 €) our X1 xDrive 20d test put everything on his side. Nevertheless it would be very bad faith not to appreciate his behavior. Good maintenance of the fund, effective filtration of inequalities, absence of understeer and nice overall balance combine to put the BMW in top class at this level. At the point of surprising to adopt, on a winding road, a sports steering little relation to the vocation of the craft … nor with its braking which, for once, finally show some signs of weakness.

Round, discreet and very available, the two-liter diesel 190 hp full advantage of the automatic transmission, smooth and responsive, to provide driving at once fluid and tonic. And this, whatever the adopted rhythm. From about 6.5 l / 100 km in quiet driving, consumption rises to almost 8 in the hilly course on more sustained use, which is still very reasonable. Finally, if the X1 does not claim to be a franchisor-road, in good SUV, it allows no less, thanks to its generous ground clearance, four-wheel drive and on quality control in the descent series team to move away during the box. For even more freedom.
