GM is diversifying its new line of Hummer electric vehicles with the presentation of the SUV inspired by the pickup truck that we discovered a few months ago. SUV or pickup, both are grossly indecent and not for tomorrow.
GM has said it: electrification is at the heart of its strategy for the future. The new Hummer EV is already announcing its second model, an SUV. However, we will have to be patient because it will not be marketed before 2024, if all goes well.
From the unveiling of the Hummer EV pickup last year, GM confirmed the marketing of a sport utility vehicle. Here we are ! It was in California that GM introduced its very first fully electric SUV. Just like the van, this utility will be nothing ordinary.
As it takes all the lines of the van, we must go to the rear to discover a closed space, the trunk which takes the place of the body. Overall, the utility’s proportions are more harmonious than those of the pickup truck: it is 508 millimeters (20 inches) shorter, and its wheelbase has been reduced by 226 millimeters (8.9 inches). To get a better idea of its size, note that at 4999 millimeters (196.8 inches) it sits between the GMC Tahoe and the Chevrolet Suburban.
In terms of style, we immediately recognize the characteristics of the Hummer, with the development of the radiator grille, in particular, which is also illuminated. GM renews all the spectacular design elements that we first saw on the pickup like the famous removable roof. Of course, all the lighting is LED.
The beast’s heart is electrified. GM offers no less than 20 modules of its Ultium battery technology. What, in fact, allows a range of some 483 kilometers according to the first analyzes of GM. Fortunately, the recharging system with a power of 300 kilowatts at a voltage of 800 volts DC can recover more than 160 kilometers of range in 10 minutes. This mechanical monster will be as indecent in power as the pickup truck with no less than 830 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Engineers estimate it will complete the 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.5 seconds. Although the horsepower is there, not a word on the towing capacity.
Being 100% electric, it has very interesting tricks such as the presence of a very generous front trunk which completes the rear trunk. Moreover, the latter, with the lowered backrest, reached 2,316 liters. It is also possible to power tools for work or accessories for hobbies up to 3 kilowatts. Through this auxiliary generator, the user can even recharge another electric vehicle.
When it comes to pricing, we follow the logic of the pickup truck and we are not in the bargain department. At the opening of the range for the EV2, we are talking about $ 88,898 and we get a range of over 400 kilometers and “only” 625 horsepower. GM will offer it in the spring of 2024. Starting with the EV2X, it is $ 104,898. In his case, we get more freedom at 483 kilometers. It will be offered in spring 2023.
Next is the big cavalry with the power of 830 horsepower and the full torque of 11,500 lb-ft. In the case of this EV3X, we are talking about $ 119,898. The latter will also appear in spring 2023. Those who will arrive the fastest, at the beginning of 2023, are the Edition 1 and Edition 1 with an extreme off-road package. In their cases, prices are advertised at 125,898 and $ 131,898. Unfortunately, these versions should not be counted on: they are all sold already.
GM is expanding the Hummer EV range with an original product that respects the arrogant spirit of the H2 of the 2000s. On the other hand, the switch to electrification is a good illustration of the fact that the brand can go through the ages. Besides the prices, the only disappointment comes from the availability. It’s not tomorrow that we’ll see Hummer EVs on the road.
