On a new, common engine and chassis platform, the new Gold Wing is available in two variants: as the base model GL1800 Gold Wing and as a “Tour Edition” with Topbox. The latter is also available with DCT dual-clutch gearbox and airbag. Depending on the model and equipment, up to 48 kg of weight was saved compared to the predecessor model.
Already in the conception phase, the engine and chassis were developed together in order to position the driver further ahead and to create a motorcycle that is as compact and active as possible. The aluminum bridge frame is equipped with a double wishbone front suspension to bring the engine closer to the front wheel. Thus, the front wheel moves more in the vertical direction and down. This design allows a stiff and stable front wheel with best suspension behavior with reduced friction. The tuning of suspension and damping can be additionally adjusted electrically by pressing a button on the new Gold Wing.
Despite the revised dimensions, the new six-cylinder engine has lost neither power nor torque or running culture. New are Throttle By Wire (electronic throttle) and four selectable driving modes: TOUR, SPORT, ECON and RAIN. The equipment also includes the Honda Selectable Torque Control (traction control) and a Combined Braking System (CBS), which is regulated according to the selected driving mode. Suspension / damping system and Hill Start Assist (mountain traction help) increase comfort. The start-stop system ensures optimized fuel consumption.
The foot-operated transmission has 6 gears, the DCT dual-clutch transmission has 7 gears. The function and characteristics of the electronically controlled DCT transmission are determined in practice via the respective driving mode. A maneuvering function that helps the vehicle move forward and backward at a pace is also available on machines equipped with DCT. The manual transmission has a reverse gear as before.
The Gold Wing model year 2018 conveys a sense of freedom with driving pleasure on a completely new level. The noticeably improved performance is accompanied by extremely relaxed driving pleasure. The stylish and aerodynamically efficient fairing directs the wind around the driver and front passenger, providing an electrically adjustable windshield and comfortable seats for extra comfort. Features such as smart key system, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity add value to the features.
Much attention was paid to the finishes and high-quality finish. The painted parts of the panel have rich tones with clear lacquer finish, for the seat covers were selected particularly high quality materials. The lower cladding is provided with clear surfaces.
