In November 2017, BMW will launch the 6 Series Gran Turismo, a five-door vehicle with which to replace the Series 5 Gran Turismo. It has a body that measures 5091 millimeters in length, 1902 mm in width and 1538 mm in height. It is, therefore, a little longer, just as wide and lower than the model it replaces. The wheelbase is 3070 mm, the same as the BMW 7 Series .
BMW claims to have worked intensively to reduce the weight of the vehicle compared to its predecessor. It has used high strength steel in many parts of the body and chassis, aluminum in the doors, bonnet and tailgate of the trunk and glass-reinforced plastic as sound insulation. According to BMW, the average reduction of weight with respect to the Series 5 Gran Turismo is approximately 150 kilograms.
The Gran Turismo 6 is ready to accommodate five people and, according to the data provided by BMW, in the rear seats there is more free height to the roof than in the previous model (something that we will check as soon as we have access to a unit ). The trunk has a volume of 610 liters, 80 more than the Series 5 , 95 more than the Series 7 and 110 more than the Series 5 Gran Turismo. When folding the backrests of the posterior seats (they do it in proportions 40:20:40) the volume increases until 1800 liters.
All Gran Turismo 6 Series have a suspension with helocoidal springs on the front axle and pneumatic type on the rear (with self-leveling function). Optionally, you can order the “Adaptive chassis”, which includes pneumatic springs also for the front axle and shock absorbers with variable adjustment or a steering system in the rear wheels (in addition to the front).
At the time of launch, the Series 6 Gran Turismo can be ordered with two petrol engines -630i GT of 258 hp and 640i GT of 340 hp- and one diesel -630d GT of 265 hp. The lower power has four cylinders and the remaining two, six; In all cases they are supercharged by turbocharger and are associated with an automatic gearbox type torque converter and eight ratios. Traction is always on the rear wheels, although the two most powerful versions can also be ordered with xDrive all-wheel drive.
The drag coefficient is 0.25, a very good value but worse than that of a BMW 5 Series (0.22 at best) or a Mercedes-Benz E-Class (0.23 at best) . Some of the measures that BMW has used to achieve a low Cx have been the use of sheets after the grill that open or close automatically to improve engine cooling or to reduce drag (Air Curtain) , Air vents located behind the front wheels that channel the airflow towards the rear of the vehicle (\’Air Breather\’) or a spoiler on the gate that automatically deploys when it exceeds 120 km / h and returns to its accommodation when Is circulated below 80 km / h.
The Gran Turismo 6 Series can have many safety systems and driving aids that work thanks to a team consisting of a stereoscopic camera, a radar and ultrasonic sensors. They are, among others, the city emergency braking system with pedestrian recognition, the active speed programmer with jam assist or the blind spot detector . BMW has united the active speed programmer and the lane maintenance system in a single function so that it allows the vehicle to maintain the distance and speed with the previous vehicle and also act on the steering to keep it centered by the lane by the That circulates. As in Series 5 and Series 7, The Gran Turismo 6 Series can have a system that allows you to park in tight spaces without the driver being inside. It is operated through the vehicle control and also allows the engine to start and stop.
There are several exterior and interior decoration programs for the 6 Series Gran Turismo, whose denominations are: Sport Line, Luxury Line and Sports Package M (in this gallery there are two examples). Optionally, it can also have a night vision system , LED headlights with adaptive function, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a Head-up Display with color indications and a resolution of 400×800 pixels or a multimedia system with a touch screen of 10 , 25 inches and possibility of handling by gestures.
