The 2017 Volkswagen Golf is a renewal of Golf 2013 (Both belong to the same generation of this model, the seventh). It presents innovations and improvements in the equipment and in the range of motors. The interior is identical except for the new multimedia systems available and the possibility of requesting a digital instrumentation.
The most affordable version is the Golf 3p 1.0 TSI 110 hp. It has a three cylinder petrol engine and costs € 150 150. To acquire the five-door body you have to pay 650 euros more and for the Variant (family) another 880 euros extra. The price of the most affordable Diesel version is 23,040 euros (Golf 3p 1.6 TDI 116 hp).
We have tested the two versions mentioned: 1.0 TSI 110 hp (petrol) and 1.6 TDI 116 hp (Diesel). The Golf 1.0 TSI seems to us a much more recommendable purchase than the Golf 1.6 TDI. In addition to its lower selling price, € 2900 less, it has an engine that runs smoother and quieter, allowing you to accelerate faster and whose fuel consumption is hardly higher.
If we take as a reference the starting price of the Golf 5p 1.0 TSI 110 CV -20 800 euros, level of equipment Edition- and that of the versions of similar power of its alternatives, an Opel Astra , A Ford Focus And a Renault Mégane are available for much less money (all except the Renault, have a three – cylinder engine; While an Audi A3 , An Infiniti Q30 And a Volvo V40 Equivalents are much more expensive.
According to our insurance comparator , the cheapest insurance without excess franchise for a Golf 5p 1.0 TSI 110 CV is offered by Qualitas Auto and costs 568 euros a year – for a 33-year-old man, who lives in Madrid, travels 15 000 km a year and has a square of a community garage. Keeping the conditions of the policy holder, the price of insurance for a Volvo V40 T2 122 hp is exactly the same, while in the case of a Renault Mégane TCe 100 hp is a little lower (€ 548 / year, and in all Cases with the same company, which this time is the one that gives the lowest prices).
As in Golf 2013, there is a version called Golf Alltrack, based on the Golf Variant, which is distinguished by having a suspension that raises the body 20 millimeters more with respect to the ground and by wearing plastic protections in the lower area of the bodywork. The range of engines available for this version is smaller than in the rest and always has full wheel drive. Below these lines is a summary table of all possible combinations of body, engine, gearbox and traction system. All the combustion engines are four-cylinder – except the 1.0 TSI which has three – and are supercharged by a turbocharger .

The 150 hp 1.5 TSI EVO petrol engine is brand new. It has a system of disconnection of cylinders and a new manual gearbox. This engine runs very smoothly and its response is linear and intense over a wide range of revolutions.
Another technical novelty is the replacement of the automatic gearbox of double clutch DSG of 6 speeds by one of 7. So far, the DSG of 7 marches Was only used in versions with maximum torque of 250 Nm, so it could not be combined with gasoline engines of more than 180 hp and Diesel of more than 150 hp. The six-ratio DSG box was multi-disc clutches bathed in oil and the seven-clutch single-disc clutches dry; The operation of the former is softer than that of the latter; Of this new box, which we have not tested, we have no information except that it reduces consumption by 10%.
The most powerful diesel version -Golf GTD- does not receive any changes, so its engine continues to deliver 184 hp. There are also no mechanical changes in the hybrid plug-in GTE version, which has an electric motor and a gasoline engine, which give a combined power of 204 hp (the electric range is 50 kilometers. The power of the petrol versions Golf GTI, Golf GTI Performance and Golf R goes up 10, 15 and 10 horses respectively, so now it is 230, 245 and 310 CV correspondingly. In the completely electric version, called e-Golf, the homologated autonomy, according to the NEDC cycle, goes up from 190 to 300 km.
Discounting the sports versions -GTD, GTI, GTI Performance and R-, plug-in hybrid -GTE- and electric -e-Golf-, there are three levels of equipment for the rest of Golf: Edition, Advance and Sport (from minus More equipped).
Within the equipment related to the aid to the driving, are new in the Golf 2017 an automatic braking system with detection of pedestrians; An automatic traffic jam system – operates at less than 60 km / h on freeway-type tracks and drives throttle, brake and steering to center the car on the lane and maintain the safety distance with the previous vehicle; It is only available in combination with the automatic transmission; And the “Emergency Assist” function, which detects if the driver neglects his task, in which case he gives various warning signals to alert him. If you do not respond, you can stop the car automatically. Another new element is the help in driving backward with trailer. Finally, there is a new version of the semi-automatic parking system, which is now able to park in smaller spaces, automatically exit the space and park front in squares perpendicular to the street direction.
The aesthetic changes are due to new bumpers, front fins and lighting systems. The xenon headlights that could carry the Golf 2013 are no longer available in the Golf 2017, in which they have been replaced by a few LEDs (are standard or optional depending on the level of equipment). If the headlights are not installed, they will be halogen. The LED technology is also present in the pilots at all levels of equipment. The tire catalog is new and there are new colors for the body.
