The Volkswagen Amarok 2017 is a pickup of 5.25 meters in length with four doors and five seats. It replaces the Amarok 2011 , although it is not a new generation, but an update of the range of engines, appearance and equipment. It is on sale for 44 485 euros .
The two versions available have the same diesel engine – with 6 cylinders placed in V, 3.0 liters of displacement and a turbocharger-, but they give different power: 204 and 224 CV (from September of 2017 there will be an additional variant with 163 CV). The gearbox is always automatic torque converter and eight ratios and the traction is on all four wheels (4MOTION).
This 6-cylinder engine was not available in the 2011 Amarok, which had a 4-cylinder Diesel, with 2.0 liters of displacement and a power of 140 and 180 hp. Despite the increase in displacement and power, the average fuel consumption is only 0.1 l / 100 km higher.
Some of the alternatives to the Volkswagen Amarok are the Ford Ranger , the Nissan NP300 Navara , the Isuzu D-MAX and the Toyota Hilux . None of these pick-ups have more powerful engines than the Amarok. Also, none of them has a higher price than the Amarok, nor better performance ( comparative tab ). All the pick-up vehicles for sale in Spain are approved as an open box truck, so they can not travel more than 90 km / h and must pass the ITV more often than a tourism.
I have briefly driven an Amarok V6 3.0 TDI 204 hp with a companion person and no cargo in the box. In these conditions, the engine accelerates the Amarok with good speed. The difference in acceleration compared to version 2.0 TDI 180 hp of Amarok 2011 is sensitive. In addition, the new engine produces less vibrations and noise. Except for the engine, the driving impressions of the Amarok 2011 are applicable to the Amarok 2017.
The Amarok 2017 is only available with traction total permanent with a center differential type Torsen . Amarok in 2011 there were two more traction systems: rear – wheel drive and switchable full (only for versions with manual transmission). The latter included reductora , a system that is not present in the Amarok 2017 and that facilitates the advance by steep slopes with complicated terrains. It is possible that as Volkswagen increases the engine range add some of the traction options discussed.
The aesthetic changes that Volkswagen has made focus on the front of the vehicle, in which the bumper, the grill and the fog lamps have a different design. There are also new models of alloy wheels (up to 20 inches in diameter) and body colors that were not previously available.
In the passenger compartment, there are new optional seats, with more possibilities of adjustment and with an ergonomics certificate issued by AGR -Aktion Gesunder Rücken-, a German company whose purpose is to promote research in everything related to the decrease of the pains of back. The design of the dashboard is different, as well as the steering wheel. There is also a new multimedia system, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto protocols.
There are two levels of equipment: Premium and Highline. In both cases an electric steering with variable assistance depending on the speed “Servotronic” and the system “Automatic Post-Collision Braking System”, which stops the vehicle automatically after having suffered an impact, is standard. Other elements available are xenon headlights for short and long, a rear parking aid camera and a stability control with trailer stabilization function. You can also order various accessories, such as side stirrups, cargo area covers or protection bars.
