Fiat updates the 500L it originally launched in 2012. The update has been profound, as it states that 40% of the components are new. The main differences are in the front, although there are also visible changes in the dashboard.
Since October 2017 there are four variants of bodywork whose name is City Cross (the last to appear, for sale from 18,070 euros ), Urban (from 15 660 euros), Cross (from 17 290 euros) and Wagon (from 18 950 euros ). The starting price of the Fiat 500L with the 95-horsepower Diesel engine is 17 650 euros, which is lower than its main alternatives, with the exception of the Ford Tourneo Courier , which is much less expensive . For its part, the Fiat 500L Wagon is currently the smallest vehicle in Spain that can have seven seats.
The City Cross variant, added in October 2017, is distinguished from the rest of the range because it has a body 25 mm farther from the ground, specific bumpers with a protective plate to move on stony roads, decorative moldings and painted elements of black, such as 17-inch alloy wheels, rear window covers and roof (optionally). For this variant there are nine body colors available, one of them exclusive, called Naranja Sicilia. It can have manual or automatic (Dualogic), petrol engines of 95 and 120 hp and diesel of 95 hp. The passenger compartment also receives lightweight changes, such as seats with black upholstery and white stitching and black or white stripes for the dashboard.
The Fiat 500 L Urban is the one that previously had no specific denomination (was 500 L to dry), the Cross previously was denominated Trekking; the Wagon is the previous 500L Living. The length of each is different: the Urban 500L measures 4.24 meters (4.15m the previous model), the 500L Cross, 4.28m and the 500L Wagon, 4.38 meters. The volume of the trunk of the Urban and Cross is the same, 455 liters (with the seat of the second row in its most advanced position). The Fiat 500L Wagon has 638 liters in the same circumstances – which is a lot -, which stay at 416 liters if the seat is delayed.
The 500L Wagon, because it is longer, in addition to having more trunk, can carry two additional seats. We have not been able to get into it yet, but Fiat says that its seats in the third row are valid for occupants up to 1.65 m tall, so basically serve to carry children occasionally.
In all Fiat 500L, the second row seats can be moved forward or back through a lane, allowing the configuration of the space available for passengers and luggage.
The range of engines, which is similar to the previous 500L, stands out for the amount of fuel they can consume. There are gasoline, gasoline and gas engines (which may be liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or natural gas) and diesel. Those Fiat 500 L that can work with any of these gases lose luggage capacity by the presence of the additional tank. There is no hybrid or electric version.
Of gasoline and LPG there is one of 120 HP; of gasoline and natural gas there is one of 80 CV; and of gasoleo there are of 95 and 120 CV. Those that only work with gasoline are of 95 horses and of 105. The one of 95 CB has four cylinders and 1368 cm³; the 105 hp, two and 875 cm³. Neither of them achieves a brilliant performance, since its acceleration capacity is scarce although the difference between one and another can be clearly seen, as well as the little refined performance of the two cylinders and their less pleasant sound. The gearshift, according to the engine, can be manual of five or six speeds; there is also an automatic one called commercially “Dualogic”.
The Fiat 500L Cross has some characteristics to facilitate its use outside the asphalt: a suspension that leaves the body 25 mm farther from the ground, tires of type M S (provide a little more grip on mud and snow), a program specific to the traction control intended to start on sliding surfaces at less than 30 km / h (traction ) and descent control (Gravity Control). The different driving programs are activated from a circular knob called Mode Selector which is placed at the bottom of the dashboard, under the controls of the air conditioner. Other differences of the 500L Cross are a set of aesthetic and protective elements for the body. Some of its rivals are the Ssangyong Tivoli or the Opel Crossland X, although they are somewhat smaller than the Fiat. Of these, only the Ssangyong can have four-wheel drive.
All versions have standard safety features such as the city braking system (City Brake, which can automatically brake the car below 30 km / h if there is a vehicle in front of it); a 5 “touch screen (Radio Uconnect, which includes Bluetooth connection for the phone, SMS reader, voice recognition for some functions, USB connection and steering wheel controls) or LED daytime running lights. In option there is a more advanced multimedia system (Uconnect HD Live) with 7 “touch screen and support for Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Also in option there is a rear parking camera (which gives an image of higher quality than the previous model, and by the end of 2017 will take parking guides).
The body can be chosen in up to 10 colors (some new) and the ceiling in three (black, glossy black and white). In addition, Fiat offers many decorative elements for both the exterior and the interior and packages of options.
Using the car insurance comparator we have calculated the cost of an all-risk insurance policy without a franchise for a 42-year-old teacher residing in Ferrol, Coruña. Her particular conditions are that she is single, she parks the car in a communal garage, she has been working with her previous company ( Zurich Seguros ) for more than 10 years and travels less than 20,000 km a year. The cheapest policy is Direct Insurance for 336 euros with good quality (6.73 points out of 10) and a ratio of quality to very good price (7.87 out of 10).
