2017 Fiat 124 Spider
Fiat applied a whole host of changes to the donor Mazda MX-5, but most of the similarities are limited to the chassis. Both cars share the same double-wishbone front, multi-link rear suspension arrangement, as well as an electric power-steering system. The two also share the Miata\’s manual soft-top.
But that\’s where the similarities end. The 124 Spider features completely new sheet metal, giving it a radically different look. Fiat claims there are plenty of throwbacks to the original vehicle in the 2017 model, including grille patterns and what the company calls “power domes” atop the hood. The front lights have a very old-school appeal, as well. The taillights are a bit more modern, with the overall layout reminding us of — dare we say it — the Viper.
The roof windshield engages and disengages manually and easily
The new Fiat 124 Spider is a convertible with a canvas roof and two-seater measuring 4.05 meters long by 1.74 wide and 1.23 high. As in the MX-5, the roof windshield engages and disengages manually and easily.
The powertrain is completely different, as well. Under the 124 Spider\’s hood lies a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, similar to the one used in the Fiat 500 Abarth. It\’s not the same, though, because it\’s packing a fair bit more power — 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, to be specific. Buyers have the choice between a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. The manual transmission is not the same as the crisp tranny in the MX-5, and we\’re hoping Fiat was able to outfit their version with the same short throw feel. If you want the higher trim level, you\’ll have to be content with the slushbox alone (at least at the time of launch).
The two major differences with the Japanese model are mechanical and price . In relation to the former, the Fiat 124 Spider offers an engine only-in center position delantera- own development, the1.4 MultiAir Turbo 140 hp and mated to a manual six-speed gearbox and rear wheel drive, respecting the DNA of any good sports roadster that boasts.
In relation to the price, the most basic 124 Spider is more expensive than the MX-5
In relation to the price, the 124 Spider is more expensive than the MX-5. In Spain it is sold in two versions , the most basic comes standard with alloy wheels 16 “, electric door mirrors, cloth seats, coating the black roll bar, manual climate control, button keyless start system, radio with 3 “screen with MP3 USB, bluetooth, four airbags and cruise control. Its price, 25,990 euros, almost 3,000 more than the MX -5 less equipped .
Inside, the 124 Spider looks like a Miata in nicer clothing. The seats’ shape, bolstering, stitching patterns, and cloth upholstery are different. While the overall dashboard shape is the same, the upper part is covered with a soft-touch material, also used on the upper door panels. Extensive use of satin-chrome finish lends an upscale zing to all trim levels. The manual convertible top on all models has acoustic insulation and a nice inner liner, which Mazda provides only on the Grand Touring version of the Miata. Chrysler’s Uconnect infotainment system isn’t compatible with Mazda’s hardware, so the 124 uses Mazda’s user-friendly system with Fiat graphics.
Angled taillights are a sly nod to the tipped-up outer fenders of the original roadster.
The Fiat 124 Spider Lusso, for 27,990 euros , adds alloy wheels 17 “, dual chrome exhaust, front fog lights, front pillar silver, leather seats, silver roll bar, protector box instruments upholstered in leather with stitching view and automatic climate control. the most equipped MX-5 are slightly more expensive (about 700 euros), but have a more powerful two-liter engine and 160 hp.
